We Spent the Week Together and Didn't Get Sick of Each Other...At Least Not That I Know Of!

As I have continued writing this blog weekly and focused on developing my book, I have found so many opportunities to reflect on our chaotic family life from what seems like an eternity ago. I have also found myself reflecting on how time looks very different now and how I treasure that time differently than I did when they were young.

Let me explain.

You see when they were young, time truly seemed to be measured in moments. So much of our time was filled with movement from activity to activity, that those moments where I was able to connect with them (even briefly) in a meaningful way was super powerful. I had to intentionally find those moments where we were together doing everyday things (eating, driving, playing) and make the most of that time.

As they grew and got busier (and really more independent), time was still measured in moments, but I found I had less control over when those moments would happen. Packed schedules, homework and chores filled up so much of our time. Yet, I still had to intentionally find those moments where we were together doing everyday things (eating, driving, homework) and make the most of that time.

Now they are grown. Each of them are adults finding their way in this world, using the unique strengths and abilities God has blessed them with. I have also found myself looking forward to those moments we have together. Sometimes those moments are with only one or two of them and sometimes we are blessed to have all of us together! I find myself treasuring those moments even more now than I ever have before!

Just this last week, we had a chance to take a family trip to the Upper Peninsula (UP) in Michigan. This trip was an (early) Father’s Day gift to my husband. You see he has been deployed halfway across the United States for the last six months, teaching at an academy for his job. Life without him with us was more difficult than I could have ever imagined. While the trip plans included long hikes to see beautiful scenery, kayaking, beaches, and boats, it was less about all of those “to do’s” or “must see places” and more about being together.

For me, it was definitely an amazing way to celebrate and give thanks to God for the gifts he has given me (an awesome husband and father and four amazing kids). Being able to find not just a couple of days but a whole week to be together was a blessing! And while we saw some beautiful sites, the best memories I will always have will be those moments together whether we were in the car for the long drive, around a campfire, or in the midst of the beauty of nature. Incredible. Moments.

No matter where your are in life right now-young kiddos, school age children, or adults, I pray that you are able to carve out those moments as you are able to. As I look back now, it is those times that hold the strongest memories and I believe make the biggest impact.

I would love to pray for you and for your time with your children.

Dear God, thank you for brief moments you give us during busy days of parenting and all the activities and "to-do's" our lives are filled with. I ask that you help each reader find those times within each week and try new ways to make the most of that time. God, please help them to build those strong memories that are lasting and strong. Amen.
